What Is Crème Fraîche? 

You may think of crème fraîche as of thick, rich, and mild-flavored sour cream or yoghurt. Yet, the making processes slightly differ for each of these dairy products. That’s why they also have different culinary properties.

Centuries ago, making crème fraîche was an advantageous way to preserve leftover milk. Today, with a similar manufacturing technology, crème fraîche has turned into an all-purpose ingredient.

The cream is cultured with lactic acid bacteria and left at a room temperature for some time. The bacteria create an acidic environment where the milk can’t spoil. The cultured cream gradually thickens and acquires a delicate tangy flavor.

Tips on How to Use Crème Fraîche

Shelf Life and Storage

If you buy a batch and don’t open it at once, crème fraîche can keep its texture and flavors for about two weeks in the fridge. 

After you open the batch, try to finish it in no longer than three days. And if you don’t use crème fraîche, put it in the fridge.
